Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cynosure Smartskin Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Cynosure Smartskin Fractional CO2 lasers produce dramatic results through photorejuvenation with fewer complications than older non-fractional CO2 lasers. With Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing, the laser removes only a part of your skin’s surface. The laser is fractional or fractionated, applying energy in a pattern that destroys some parts of the skin and leaves other parts intact. Faster healing time and fewer complications result from leaving part of the skin undamaged to rejuvenate the skin surface.

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing enables New Radiance to produce dramatic results that rejuvenate the appearance of skin. Fractional CO2 laser is performed with different protocols to remove acne scars, lines, wrinkles, and for more aggressive skin tightening. It can also be used in a micro-ablative mode to improve complexion, skin tone quality, pore size and sun damage.

What Happens During the Treatment?

We pass the Cynsosure Smartskin laser over the skin, delivering pulses of laser light that last less than a millisecond. As the laser is passed over the skin, it delivers energy in 2-3 second pulses. The treatment is progressively applied to the target treatment areas. The entire procedure typically requires between 30 minutes to 1 hour to perform, depending on the areas being treated and the patient goals.

What Side Effects Are Typical with the Treatment?

As with any medical procedure, side effects and healing time vary by patient. Typical side effects from the treatment include: swelling, redness and skin crusting. Skin redness typically lasts for several days to weeks.

CO2 laser treatments pose little risk for blistering or scarring. For patients with olive or darker skin, hyperpigmentation is a potential risk.

The gold standard Cynosure Smartskin CO2 lasers used by New Radiance are fractionated. This provides increased control and faster healing. It also reduces the risk of potential side effects such as hypopigmentation.

Your free pre-treatment consultation will identify if you are a good candidate. At the consultation, you will be informed of the expected extent of your procedure to achieve your goals, the expected recovery period and how soon after the treatment you may expect to see full results.

What is the Difference Between Ablative and Non-ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Ablative laser skin resurfacing removes the top layer of your skin. They are very effective at treating wrinkles, scars, and other skin concerns. Ablative resurfacing actually removes the top layer of skin. This results in significant downtime for healing.

Non-ablative laser skin resurfacing is less invasive. Non-ablative procedures employ heat to stimulate cells and thicken the underlying collagen to improve your skin tone and elasticity. Non-ablative laser skin resurfacing does not remove all skin. This results in a more rapid recovery and less downtime.

This treatment only removes part of the skin by applying laser energy in a pattern. This produces dramatic results with less downtime and recovery.

How Much Does the Treatment Cost?

Cynosure Smartskin Fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment starts at $1,199. Total treatment cost depends on the size of the area being treated and the number of treatments required to achieve your personal goals. Our current new patient special for $1,199 includes one full face treatment.

What Should I Expect During the Treatment?

We will apply a topical numbing cream to make your treatment as comfortable as possible. Fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing typically requires 30 to 60 minutes to perform. After the procedure, your skin may be covered with Aquaphor – a petroleum jelly – to protect your skin and promote faster healing.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

During your free consultation, we will advise you on the number of Cynosure Smartskin CO2 laser treatments you’ll need to achieve your personal goals. Patients typically start with one treatment. Once the results of the first treatment are seen over several months, the treated area will be reassessed to determine if another treatment is needed.

Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing results per treatment vary based on skin quality and thickness and the settings used on the device during the treatment. When more aggressive settings are used, patients typically see significant improvement with one treatment.
