Questions and Answers
What Causes Wrinkles?
The lines and wrinkles that contribute to an older appearance are the result of often-repeated facial movements. Smiling, squinting, and furrowing the brow dozens of times a day over the course of a lifetime etches wrinkles into the skin. With age, the body’s production of collagen and elastin declines — the skin becomes less elastic and less able to return to normal after being stretched by muscle contractions. Neuromodulators, solve this problem by limiting the impact of the repetitions that cause the signs of aging.*
Is Botox Cosmetic Right for Me?
Are you interested in reducing lines and wrinkles to achieve a more youthful appearance, but aren’t sure that Botox is the right solution for you? Botox is an effective method of reducing lines and wrinkles for both men and women. In fact, the number of men choosing neuromodulator treatments, like Botox, is on the rise — in the past three years, men have received over one million botulinum toxin treatments. Botox is also a desirable option for adults of all ages. When contemplating whether to get a Botox treatment, the severity of your lines and wrinkles is a better determinant than your age. In fact, 64% of plastic surgeons report seeing a rise in neuromodulator treatments for patients in their early 30’s. Everyone’s lines form differently and are influenced by a variety of factors, from collagen production to damage caused by the sun. After your Botox treatment, no one should be able to tell you’ve had anything done — you’ll look like yourself, only with less noticeable lines.*

Not All Botox is Created Equal
Botox at one facility may not be exactly what you get at another, unfortunately.
Clostridium Botulinum toxin type A is supplied in a manufacturers vial containing 100 units of vacuum-dried neurotoxin powder complex. A practitioner cannot inject a powdered substance through a syringe. In order to inject active units, saline must be added to reconstitute. This process enables Botox to be extracted from the vial into the syringe and then injected.
There are 100 units in every vial. The more saline added to the vial, the less active units will be in each 1/10 mL extracted into the syringe. Some may refer to this is as the dilution process, but it is actually called reconstitution. What this means for patients: each facility can reconstitute the injection differently, using the recommended standard amount of saline or a greater amount in order to dilute the product. Unfortunately, over-diluted product is a problem in South Florida.
With this in mind, you should be cautious and only deal with a facility that you trust. Prices vary based on how the formula was reconstituted.
You may get a large syringe and only have received half or less of the amount of the units you need. Most Cosmetic Centers that inject properly charge from $13.00 to $17.00 per unit of Botox or $250-300 per area treated.
We frequently hear from new patients that treatments from other centers did not seem to work well and they believe the product does not work. Then, after receiving Botox at New Radiance Cosmetic Centers, they are amazed at the difference proper dilution and technique make.
Table B: Recommendations for Reconstitution and Handling*
Diluent (saline) added to Botox vial (0.9% sodium chloride injection) | Resulting dose/ Units per 0.1 (1/10) mL |
1.0 mL | 10.0 U |
2.0 mL | 5.0 U |
2.5 mL | 4.0 U* |
4.0 mL | 2.5 U |
8.0 mL | 1.25 U |
So if a center dilutes their Botox® with 8.0mL of saline you would only receive 1.25 units of Botox® per 0.1 mL injected vs. the proper dose of 4.0 units per 0.1 mL injected. In other words you’re receiving mostly saline. Now you know why some centers price their Botox® so low and why all Botox® injections are not created equal.
